Ask
intellia ask answers a question about the Intellia platform and this CLI. It answers from what the CLI itself
knows: its verified examples, its guides, the schemas of the files it reads, its own command list and, when your
key can read it, your organization’s inventory.
intellia ask "how do I add a response rule to a webhook?"Pass the question as one quoted argument.
What an answer holds
An answer has an explanation, numbered steps, the files the steps need, the commands to run, the commands that confirm the outcome, and the sources it was drawn from: an example, a guide, a schema, a command or the inventory.
Every command and file is checked before you see it
Before an answer is shown, the CLI checks it:
- Commands. Each
intelliacommand in it is parsed against the CLI’s own command list, with its arguments and options. A command must be a single invocation, with no pipes, redirections or paths outside the current directory. - Files. Each file goes through the validator that
deploy, validateandmodules checkuse for its kind. When no field in a YAML file names its kind, it is checked as an agent, asdeploywould treat it, andnotessays so. - Sources. Each source must name something the answer was given.
When something fails, the model is asked once more with the exact errors. Whatever still fails is removed, and the answer says how many items it removed.
Each step carries a marker:
| Marker | Meaning |
|---|---|
verified |
Everything the step carries matches a verified example: its command is a step of one, and its file is byte-identical to a file of one. A step with only a command, or only a file, needs that one to match. Verified examples have been run end to end against a real organization. |
checked |
The step was adapted to your question. Its command and files passed the checks above, but it has not been run end to end. |
unconfirmed
unconfirmed lists what was removed. Each item gives:
kind:step, command, check, file, answer(the explanation) orsource;location: where the item was in the model’s original answer, before anything was removed. That is a step number (originalStep, counting from 1), a position in the original commands or checks, a file path, a file’s position, a source’s position, or a field name. A position never points into thesteps, commandsor other lists you get back, since the item is no longer in them. In a terminal it reads, for example, “step 3 of the original answer”;reasons: codes with counts, such asunknown_command,schema_errororno_source.
An item never repeats the removed text, so nothing in it is a command to paste. When a removed step came before
steps that are still shown, notes says so: the later steps may depend on something the removed step would have
created. When nothing in an answer can be
confirmed, the command fails with the error code ask_unconfirmed.
It never runs code from the answer
The CLI does not execute anything the model wrote. TypeScript and JavaScript files get a syntax check only. A module
in the answer is checked as a whole only when every file in it is YAML; otherwise each file is checked on its own,
and notes says why. Answer files are checked in a temporary directory, never in your working directory.
Billing
Each answer is billed to the active organization, in the same way as intellia ai ask. A question uses up to two
model calls: the answer and, when something fails its checks, one retry. notes says when the retry happened.
Output
In a terminal, the answer prints as readable text: the explanation, then the steps with their markers and commands you can copy, the files, the checks, the sources, what could not be confirmed, and any notes.
When the output is piped, or with --json, it prints one JSON object with the fields answer, steps, files,
commands, checks, sources, unconfirmed, notes and model. A failure prints the CLI’s usual error object,
with ok: false and error, plus code and fix for the errors the CLI explains (intellia explain <code>).
intellia ask "how do I add a response rule to a webhook?" --jsonWhen the inventory is unavailable
Reading the inventory needs an org admin role. Without one, ask still answers, without your organization’s
objects, and notes says the inventory was unavailable and why.
